Hotlinking is a largely accepted Internet term for linking to another website’s images. Quite simply, if you create a site, some other person may want to use the images that you have and instead of downloading them from your site and then uploading them to their website, they could simply put links to your website. That way, each time a visitor opens their Internet site, the images will be loaded from your account, as a result stealing from your own monthly traffic quota, along with the copyright problems that can appear or that someone may be trying to trick people into thinking that they are in fact on your website. In rare situations, documents and other sorts of files could also be linked in the same exact way. To prevent this from happening and to avoid such situations, you may activate hotlink protection for your site.
Hotlinking Protection in Cloud Web Hosting
There is a way of preventing the hotlinking of your images by using an .htaccess file inside the website’s root directory, but if you are not very tech-savvy, we also offer a very easy-to-use tool that will permit you to activate the protection with a few mouse clicks and without inputting any code. The tool may be accessed through the Hepsia CP, offered with all our Linux cloud web hosting service
and the only two things that you will have to choose are a domain/subdomain from a drop-down menu and if the protection has to be enabled for the main website folder or for some subfolder. Our system shall do the rest, so you shall not need to do anything else personally on your end. If you want to disable the hotlink protection option at some point, you will just need to go back to exactly the same section, to mark the checkbox beside it and to press the Delete button.
Hotlinking Protection in Semi-dedicated Servers
If you have a semi-dedicated server
account with our company and you discover that somebody has hotlinked any of your images, you should use the protection tool we have designed and included in our in-house built Hepsia hosting CP. As soon as you switch on this option, a server-generated image will appear on the third-party website as a substitute for your real images. You'll only need to go to the Hotlink Protection section within the Control Panel and pick the domain or subdomain your website uses from a handy drop-down menu - it is as elementary as that. When necessary, you shall also have the option to activate the function just for a specific subfolder and not for the website in general. Deactivating the function is as easy - get back to the exact same section, check the box alongside the particular site and then click on the Delete button.
